Invaluable Shooting Aid

I am a firearms professional, avid hunter, shooter and handloader with 40 years of experience building all types of bolt action rifles. Some of you may know me as "Stocky", proprietor of one of the more popular new rifle stock dot-coms. (I am not a Caldwell dealer, by the way.)I mention this because I shoot a lot at the range and try to be responsible for bringing a constant flow of new shooters to the bench, as well as stepping once-a-year shooters up into the year-round shooting sports arena, in a responsible and enjoyable manner. There is no better tool to accomplish this on the market today than the Caldwell Lead Sled DFT Rest for two primary reasons - free recoil reduction and accuracy.Sighting in and/or testing loads for the best accuracy is no time to introduce human error. That time is spent at the bench to evaluate the performance of the rifle and its components, period. There's plenty of time to work on your shooting form once we have the ideal load shooting where it needs to shoot, in fact there's little to be gained working on form when the rifle isn't hitting where you're looking. This is where the 'sled comes in ....Experienced shooters tend to be set in their ways, often to a fault. When the original Lead Sled came out many years ago I must admit that I didn't like the entire concept. Real men, after all, know they are going to get belted but sit there and take it anyway, right? I was also loathe to spend the bucks on something that would "only" be used on the bench, not so much in the field, although it could be a useful tool in the right hunting situations.THE GOOD - Don't believe you're flinching? Try this experiment with your buddy: Have him turn his back while you close the bolt on the rifle prior to shooting. Tell him to sit there and take it while you watch HIM for a flinch. Do this a time or two with a cartridge in the chamber, then forget the cartridge on one and watch what happens when he pulls the trigger and flinches on an empty chamber. (Don't laugh too loud if he flinches really bad, you're next.)By not worrying consciously or subconsciously about getting kicked, combined with the absolute best ear MUFFS (not plugs on a rifle range unless they are under the muffs for double protection) so you're not flinching at the report; you are free to focus on the relationship between the crosshairs and the bullseye and the moment of truth. You'll be amazed at how much better you shoot without recoil (and another great reason to shoot a lot of rimfire, too.)THE BETTER - This particular Lead Sled DFT rest is not only built like a brick outhouse, it has the adjustability of the more expensive front benchrest rests. You slide and lock the distance from the front to rear supports with a double cam on a double rail. This means almost any sporting rifle will work fine. AR's and AK's may require something additional under the butt so the grips and clips clear the base.The major elevation adjustment is set with that big screw-wheel under the forend. Once you get it close the fine adjustment is accomplished just before the shot by turning the knob over the rear leg. Windage is adjusted with the knob in front - it moves the front bag carrier left and right just before the shot.In other words, while peering through the scope with your finger on the trigger you can literally dial the crosshairs to the target without touching the rifle. Next best thing on the market to do this will set you back at least twice as much with no recoil absorption. This is invaluable.THE BAD - One issue I have with them (I am in the gunstock business after all) is the fact that by limiting the free recoil travel, exactly what they are designed to do, a great deal of that energy is absorbed directly by the stock and could potentially damage it. Think about the analogy of placing the butt of your magnum against the biggest oak tree in the woods and let 'er rip.Three or four of those at the most on the average walnut stock and I will just about guarantee it will crack. Heck, many walnut stocks crack over the years under normal use, that's a big reason many replace them for everyday hunting and shooting. This is a big consideration with these, plus if you do crack a stock in a lead sled many manufacturers will not warranty it, so do bear this in mind. Shooting that Ultra Mag with 100 pounds of lead on your sled is not recommended in anything except a fiberglass lay-up stock.Replacing the wood with a modern synthetic or bedded laminate should be considered when using these rests as a more modern stock wouldn't be an issue, I have never seen a fiberglass stock damaged in a lead sled, however the potential does exist especially with wood. I contend that the potential benefits far outweigh the negative of using a plain wood stock.This can be partially mitigated by not adding weight to the sled or using one bag instead of two. Another thing you can do is epoxy bedding (you should be doing this to any wood stock anyway!) Properly epoxy bedded stocks simply do not crack.In summary, I use mine constantly now, I couldn't imagine a better way to work up loads. Nor is there a better rest with which to introduce and train new shooters and give them the instant satisfaction of being able to hit the target with a minimum of fuss, first time out. Rimfires and .223's barely move in the rest at all, therefore allowing youngsters to focus on fun, form and safety with little fear of recoil. I've seen it work again and again again and highly recommend it.

Caldwell Lead Sled

I bought the lead sled to help me more accurately sight in my deer rifle. It has proved to be a valuable asset. I know it helps me to get on target in fewer shots and as i get older it's nice that it absorbs all the recoil. I recommend this item to all shooters. Great product. I found instead of buying the expensive lead shot to weigh it down that a 20# and an extra 10# dumbell weights purchased from any discount sporting goods store works like a charm for less money.

I've used the 'sled' a couple times now out in the flatlands....it is great! Steady, solid. Holds my Ruger .243 as well as my Browning 7mm magnum and my .475 Turnbull lever action. Excellent!
