Big and balanced with minor flaws

5 inches of VG-10 steel. I like VG-10 steel as it has almost the best of both worlds. Strong cutting, edge holding (almost as good as D2...almost...ish) AND corrosion resistant(Like AUS-8). The ARC lock was a smart move, as the blade would be too heavy for a realistic spring assist. I bought the Pentagon Elite II before this, and generally like it(especially the point's design), but I simply don't like partially serrated. If I want a saw, I'll use one. An inch and a half of serration isn't really gonna do much. So on to Pros and Cons, Cons first.Cons--Heavy. Kinda pricey. Illegal to carry in public in many places(look up knife laws to make sure, it IS over 4" after all). Isn't as deep pocketed as other SOGs, probably due to size.Pros--VG-10 Blades are great, sadly hard to find because Japan(Seki in this case) has almost all production monopolized. Recurved blade focuses cutting edge. ARC lock is great, secure with easy open and close--almost feels like a balisong when you close it. Frame is very open and easy to clean. Though it is heavier than I would have thought, compared to other SOGs, due to the reinforced frame...It is very, very well balanced. When holding it the exact balance point is where my index naturally rests. It may actually be the most well balanced folding knife I've ever owned, and I own a lot.Overall thoughts--Big and balanced. I like it.

A very Nice Piece

I have been in Law Enforcement for the last 30+ years and have toted a knife along with me for all of that time. I have carried about a total of six during that time, all of which I still own but this one is the only one I still carry for the past six years. I have received extensive tactical training as well as had professional knife fighting / tactics training. For most of my career into present day, I have been a firearms/use of force trainer. I will have to say without a doubt this knife is the best well balanced knife I have found for street use. The blade is large and because it is, with the right flick of the wrist and a simultaneous flick of the thumb, most would think this was an automatic switchblade. The construction is durable and solid, there is no side to side movement of the blade. The blade has a nice finish that resists corrosion and scratches. The handle is a durable zytel type material that shows little signs of wear despite at least 6 years of being worn. I always remove the clips upon purchase and practice quickly retrieving and deployng the knife from a pocket as I feel the clip alerts the bad guys of the presence of the knife which may entice them to attempt to disarm you of it. My knife stays completely hidden until it is rapidly presented. This is a large knife which I wanted because my agency will not let us carry large straight knives. There is a smaller version if you wish of exact shape and dimension called the Spec Elite I. I own one of those as well. The blade on this knife is razor sharp. The blade is of hard steel construction and is therefore somewhat difficult to sharpen when it eventually needs it. That is recipricated in that fact that unless you abuse it, it will not need sharpening for a very long time. There are more expensive knifes made of more expensive and decorative materials but if you are looking for a good all around rugged knife for duty or self defense, this will fit the bill and then some! If you are wondering why I am writing this now, my most recent purchase due to the fact I love this knife, is because I bought a second one for posterity in case anything ever happens to the one I carry now. This latest acquisition will be simply filed away until needed. I think so much of this knife, I just wanted to guarantee that I will always have one. I can't say enough about this one!

There must be a bit of magic baked into this knife. When opened, it is a substantial and imposing presence, looking more akin to a fixed blade Bowie than a folding knife. Folded, however, it can disappear into the palm of your hand. The balance and shape is such that I've carried it in the jacket pocket of a business suit without bulge, discomfort or detection.SOG's patented blade lock is every bit as good as advertised. It engages with a reassuring click, and from that point forward there is zero give or wiggle to suggest that its a folder: it behaves like a solid object. With a slide of the button, the blade can freely swing closed. (Bonus point, with a little lubrication, the blade can swing so freely that the blade lock switch can be used as a fast opening technique.)If you've never dealt with a VG-10 blade before, you're in for a treat. It is surgically sharp, and it stays that way. I've had my Spec Elite II over 6 months and its still razor sharp without sharpening. (An elaboration on "razor sharp:" while showing it to my grown son for the first time, he asked if it came sharp enough to shave hair. I said I was sure it was, and proceeded to give it a stroke down the back of my hairy forearm. Looking down, I found a mound of hair on the blade, a runway on my arm, and a skin truly as smooth as a baby's butt. This has now become my operative definition of "scary sharp.")With its portability and functionality, I use it for something it's not designed for. I dislike eating with serated knives: a clean cut gives a cleaner taste to a good steak. When asked by the waiter why I felt the need to use my own blade, I offered him the slice test. Cut a bite of steak using the restaurant's serrated blade; then try the Spec-Elite. It never fails to make a believer.The knife impressed my son so much he bought be the SOG Access 2.0, another VG-10 blade but with the profile of half a credit card. Sharper point than an exacto blade with an edge made to last.Highly recommended.
