Not as effective as Cosequin Optimized Formula
By mahlers2nd
I normally use Cosequin Equine Optimized with MSM, 1400 Gram Container but when I ran out and the local tack shop only had the regular formula, I bought this and figured that it would be pretty much the same. I looked at the ingredient list and it basically looked to be the same only not as concentrated. I figured there wouldn't be any difference in terms of efficacy. I was WRONG!Within about a week, Ollie was having problems again -- not as bad as with no Cosequin at all but still, not as good as he had been. He was not as happy under saddle and was not moving as well as he had been. Even in pasture, he didn't do too much more than trot for a few steps. You could tell he just didn't feel good.I went back to the OPT and once again, he is doing much much better. I was watching him in pasture yesterday and he was running around at a canter and trotting and just having a great time. He is much more relaxed under saddle and comes out ready to work... he doesn't need nearly as much warm-up time.I was told by the equine vet that the regular formula is a shorter-acting formula where the optimized has a time-release element. The recommended dose is 2 scoops 1x per day. However, I have found that I actually get better results by splitting that up and doing 1 scoop in the morning and 1 in the evening. My horse doesn't need grain so I just give it to him mixed with beet pulp. He wolfs it down like it is manna from Heaven. While the Optimum is more expensive (Amazon's price is about 10 bucks cheaper than my local tack shop), it is worth every penny in terms of the quality of my horses life. I know how much I hate feeling old and achy. I would hate to inflict that on my horse -- especially when there is a product like this that makes such a big difference. I really can't recommend this product enough!!NCJAR

Multiple Search

Searched at length for the best price for this item as my horse is on it daily. Went to a lot of the equine sites and found that Entirely Pets through Amazon gave me the best price, mainly because there was NO shipping cost.

Keeps my old man moving
By K. Poehlmann
My Appendix (Thoroughbred/Quarter Horse) gelding is 27 years old. He retired from eventing in his late teens, and has been my dressage mount and trail companion for the past five years. Predictably, he started moving stiffly a few years ago. He was not outright lame, but would be hesitant to move forward freely and lengthen his stride at the trot and canter. He would also refuse to go up hills on trail rides, and act irritable if I asked too much of him.I started him on Cosequin per his vet's recommendation about a year ago. It has not turned him back into a five-year-old, but my goodness, if you could see what my old man can do! People are stunned when I tell them my horse is 27 years old and, yes, we school dressage. No, we didn't stop at Training Level. Yes, he does lateral work. Half-pass is his favourite. Flying changes? Sure. His canter pirouette won't win us Olympic gold, but the fact that a horse of his age can--and is willing to--perform a schooling pirouette is more than enough for me.There are a few key things I should mention here:1). I have a ridiculously healthy horse. I know this. I did not start with a run-down, decrepit horse and turn him into a miracle case with a simple joint supplement.2). My horse lives on pasture, 24/7/365. He is allowed absolute freedom to move around in the pasture as he sees fit, which helps to prevent him from stiffening up while standing in place for too long.3). My horse was in regular work before starting Cosequin; I did not take an old horse out of a field, throw him on a supplement, and expect him to be a fluid mover. All things considered, however, I absolutely do credit Cosequin for allowing me to continue working my horse at his advancing age. I highly recommend it for any senior horse who needs a bit of help to keep things moving due to the natural aging process.
