Audio via HDMI can be misleading
By Brian Schmidt
This unit does handle digital audio signals via HDMI. This means you don't have to have a seperate optical or coax cable for audio. But you won't get anything more than the DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 that you would normally get through the optical input. If you have a HD DVD player and are expecting this system to take advantage of Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD audio, forget it. The HD DVD players decode these new audio formats and sends them out as multi-channel linear PCM. But this Sony receiver can only handle 2 channel linear PCM. Not the 5.1 channels you need for surround sound. So there's no technical advantage over the optical or coax connections that have been around for years. You may not care and you may find this to be a great system at a great price. But I wanted to clarify this point since Sony's documentation does not spell it out.

Great deal for the price!
By nan_darou51
I have been shopping around for a small HTIB for my room, which is quite small, and that would compliment my 46" lcd tv well. My criteria were: small speakers, hdmi video switching supporting up to 1080p, audio processing through the hdmi, at least 5.1 and reasonable price. After doing some research I was all set to buy the $800 Onkyo HTS894, but then I found this Sony. Info was a little hard to find as it just came out recently and nobody had reviewed it yet. My main concern was that it wouldn't process the audio through the hdmi since all other HTIB's in the same price range didn't do it. Once I finally confirmed it would process audio through hdmi I decided that for $400 it was worth a try. Man am I a happy camper. This thing kicks major behind!!! Not only does it meet all my requirements at the low price of $400, but it sounds great. I have everything hooked up to it, HD digital dvr, dvd player and Xbox 360, they all sound great, I don't know how I lived without surround sound for so long. HTIB systems are not as good as if you buy all the components separately, but if you're looking for big bang for the buck, but still want a lot of features then I suggest taking a chance on this Sony. I'm really glad I did.

Very functional. Took a little getting used to. Needs volume setting high
By B. C. Peterson
Like the previous poster, I wanted an HTiB to which I could attach my cable box (which has an HDMI connection) and a PS3 (which also has a HDMI connection and also serves as a Blu-Ray/DVD player). The set-up was pretty easy. It comes with a microphone you place where you plan on sitting and the receiver analyzes the speaker volumes and suggests how to better place each speaker. Sort of gimmicky but cool at the same time. I took some fiddling to get the receiver to process/output audio from the second HDMI input. I changed a setting from AMP to AMP+TV back to AMP and it started working at that point. Perhaps I'm the only one who will have the problem but I still expected HDMI to be more Plug and Play. Other gripe, though not a serious one, is that the volume level needs to be up fairly high for normal listening. Eg. volume goes 0-70 and 45 is normal listening and 65 will have your neighbors banging on your door. Just seems like normal listening should be in the 30's range. The sound quality is very good, and the automatic audio signal processing (if the sound is available in more than 1 format it chooses the best) works well.
