4Nice contemporory bookcase but only at the right price
By Kyle Y
Edit 01/06/2011 - Bumped it from 3 to 4 stars. It's become a favorite fixture in my apartment despite the minor imperfections.TDLR Summary:It's a nice solid piece of furniture with a contemporary look, slightly top heavy when installed with the rollers, and imperfections in the stain and veneer. You'll be happy with it if you don't mind the imperfections, don't expect a fine piece of furniture, and buy it at the right price.I just receive this book case from AtHomeMart. I recommend doing business with this company. They called me to let me know when and how it would ship, and it arrived well packaged with no damage. I rated AtHomeMart five stars. That all being said, here's my review for this bookcase.I would think carefully before you buy it. It weighs 100+ pounds and will take 1 to 2 hours to assemble, so if you don't like it, it will be time-consuming and costly to return. Despite being sold at a room divider, it's slightly top heavy and not a showcase centerpiece that you'll want to show off to your friends. It better tucked away against the wall and viewed from a distance like in the photo (as I'll explain below). So, know what you are getting and buy it at the right price.Craftsmanship:- It's a substantial piece of furniture with 2" thick wood boards. I can't tell if they are solid wood but most likely it's particle board. The boards are definitely veneered.- I can see the veneer slightly peeling in two spots. Not noticeable from a distance and only time will tell how bad it will get. I'm going to run out for some lacquer to seal it from moisture.- The verneer has the texture of minimally sanded wood (think park bench).- I can see stain drip marks on the edge of a few boards. The drip runs along the edge with the grain of just a few boards so not noticeable from a distance.- The photo makes the bookcase look like a cherry stain finish but it is not. Maybe they send me the Cuppachino bookcase instead but given the imperfections, I'm glad they sent me one with darker finish than the picture. The bookcase I received is indeed darker and more like a mahogany finish.- Made in ChinaAssembly:- Took me about 2 hours with no help. Recommend two people to save time and for help lifting it. You assemble it on its side and then lift it vertical.- It's top heavy, so be very careful. When you lift it vertical, its momentum wants to keep going and fall over the other side. It would be more stable if you don't add the rollers (but I like it tall so I installed the wheels). This is another reason I wouldn't use it as a room divider. It's fairly stable, but if someone trips or bumps hard against it accidentally, it might fall over.- The installation instructions are poor so it's a pain to assemble. Hopefully you won't make the same mistakes. Despite the photo, the bookcase is not symmetrical. The three shelves are 18.5", 19.5" and 20" high. The vertical boards are not labeled so you if you assemble it wrong, some of the boards could stick out when you try to assemble the top/bottom boards and you'll have to take it part and flip the boards around. You have to figure out with boards are which by comparing the drill holes to the diagram. So, you'll want to lightly pre-assemble it and make sure all the parts fit before you screw everything together. Since my bookcase has some imperfections in the veneer and stain, you can experiment with flipping the boards so that the imperfections face away from you, assuming you are placing it against the wall.- Includes a small and large hex tool. You'll need your own large philips screwdriver. If you have a power drill with a very large hex bit you'll save more time and maybe blisters.Summary:It's a nice solid piece of furniture with a contemporary look, slightly top heavy when installed with the rollers, and imperfections in the stain and veneer. You'll be happy with it if you don't mind the imperfections, don't expect a fine piece of furniture, and buy it at the right price.
