Great Speakers At A Great Price!
By Duncan Idaho
Purchased and Received these speakers just a couple days ago. The free shipping was great considering the weight of the speakers. They are great! No complaints here. I was upgrading from my original aiwa speakers (made by sony) in my home entertainment system. The difference is amazing. Highs mids and lows are all great. I always recommend a powered sub woofer, I do have one. However, if you get these speakers you can get by without one.My listening interests are varied. I have listened to Kiss, ELO, The Hollies, Peter Frampton, Supertramp and some classical on these speakers so far. I have also viewed a couple movies using them. All sounded great. "Do You, (Feel Like I Do) sounded GREAT! All the ELO was crisp, clean and clear. The only "booming," as mentioned in the other review, that I heard was while listening to "Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress" by the Hollies. However, it did appear to be a bass sound that was appropriate with the song, not anything abnormal. But then again, it may just be different taste.Oh, and the picture shows the speaker as looking more of a grey than black. They are black, not the grey like the picture shows. that is good since my tv and all my entertaiment system units are all black. My advice is you cannot go wrong with these. If anything changes I will update.

just GOOD. The SSF-6000 sound better
By trublu
UPDATE: after running these for just over a year - lets clear up alot of the ASTOUNDING reviews. Realize that to get the best sound out of any speaker does not begin with the speaker itself but with the amp/receiver that pushes them. I would NOT buy these to plug into some home theater kit bundle receiver - that wont cut, even just on the power rating alone. One of the main reasons why I wrote a favorable review is due to the fact that the Sony's are connected to Yamaha's highest - rated receiver which pushes a clean 140w x channel. Thus, my review may not be a typical review of what to expect in sound quality. That said, the Sony's do an incredible job managing sound in their application as a part of my 7.1 setup, much of that can be chalked up to a quality amp which makes the 7000's sound so much better.Cut to the chase: these speakers require a heck of a lot of EQ'ing (and power) to sound GOOD. You most likely will need a subwoofer to assist in most situations. They are a perfect set of cheap speakers to complement a smaller home theater system (im not talking like 2-inch cube Panasonic bundle kits, but a nice polk or JBL mid line 5.1 speaker system). In buying these speakers, its a great addition for music listening. Standing alone, not sure the Sony's can work a room without the help of other components or a fantastic top-shelf amp. For those that dont care or just want something tall to fill an entertainment setup, the Sony's are perfect.Verdict: good budget buy, but do not expect the world out of the box.I now own the SSF-5, 6, and 7k. 5's are hooked up to a separate receiver, the 6's were hooked up to my central receiver (a $1600 Yamaha) and the 7's took the place of the 6's. I am impressed by the frequency response of the 7's. The low end is fuller of course and they handle the power coming out of my 7.1 receiver better. However, im less impressed with the mid range. Its not as dead on as the 6's and if you move about the room, the harmonics and sound direction change too much. The high end is nice because the speaker is taller than the 6's. I can't tell any difference between the hi's in the 6's and the 7's. The low end, like some reviewers have stated is in fact BOOMY; but this is what you get with a budget EIGHT INCH woofer. Smart and precise equalization is required to get the 7's sounding really good. I spent an hour doing a manual EQ setting distance, independent speaker levels (like LF, RF, LR, sub ETC) EQ'ing each, and finally arrived at a sonically sound room. I then used the Yamaha's auto tune function with microphone to see what the receiver would come up with. To my surprise, pretty similar settings. Where the 6's did not leave many dead spots in basically a perfect 15 x 15 room, the 7's left many pockets of dead air, especially dead center. Took alot of sub & front tuning to clear this up.In conclusion: I honestly would purchase the SSF-6000's again as their sound is warmer and more even. Those handle 180W, the 7000's handle 200W. If you need a broader bigger sound for a bigger space, the 7000's will do the trick, but i find they initially lack smack and punch in the low end and the mids are scattered. I have a JBL powered 12 inch sub (their higher end) and it helped but did not fix the booming, still working on the tuning. Make sure you have enough power from your amp to these things, they need it. I decided to see what my [...] would buy, the Sony's do no disappoint, short of spending 1200 on a pair of floor JBL's, these do just fine in their own right.

Best bang for your buck
By Lee
I bought these because a consumer magazine rated the performance of this model's predecessor a "best buy" in floor standing speakers. They even beat out some very expensive Polks for sonic accuracy. After getting them installed, they didn't disappoint. Excellent highs and more than adequate bass especially considering the price paid.
